The third round of the Carling Cup gets underway on Tuesday with an eagerly awaited Welsh clash top of the bill. Swansea and Cardiff have not met in nearly ten years so there is sure to be a tremendous atmosphere at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night. Newcastle host Spurs in one of a number of all Premiership clashes this round, while the University towns of Oxford and Cambridge face each other once again on Tuesday to continue their rivalry.

Swansea v Cardiff, Tuesday, Sky Sports 2, 7:45pm

Cardiff travel to Swansea as the two sides reignite their rivalry in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night. Having been promoted to the Championship last season Swansea fans would have marked their league games against Cardiff on the calendar, but this represents the first meeting of the two since April 1999. After a promising start to life in the Championship, Swansea have stuttered of late with draws against Burnley, and a resurgent Derby County. They became the first side to beat Premiership new boys Hull City this season when they ran out 2-1 victors in the last round at the Liberty Stadium. Jordi Gomez scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 105th minute, after the Welsh side had come from a goal down to take the match into extra time. Cardiff had a remarkable run to the FA Cup final last year and will be looking for a similar performance in this competition. They beat MK Dons 2-1 in the second round at Ninian Park to set up this clash, and they were relatively comfortable once Ross McCormack had given them a 45tn minute lead from the spot.

Swansea are 11/8 with VCbet to make home advantage count, with Cardiff at 9/5 with BGbet to continue their good form in cup competitions.

Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur, Wednesday, 7:45pm

Two Premiership teams that are badly out of form meet at St. James Park on Wednesday when Spurs travel to Tyneside to meet Newcastle. Both sides will welcome the break from the Premiership this game brings, and will aim to use it as a springboard to improve their league form. Holders Spurs are currently bottom of the Premiership following a disappointing start to a season that promised so much. Other than a valiant draw at Stamford Bridge they have failed to fire as expected, although they were more assured in their European cup game against Wisla Krakow last week. Newcastle have yet to get over the loss of manager Kevin Keegan last month that sent the club into turmoil, and that looks set to continue after it was put up for sale by owner Mike Ashley. Losses to Hull and West Ham have seen them drop towards the bottom of the Premiership and, like Spurs, will see this game as an opportunity to turn their season around.

BGbet have Newcastle at 11/5 for the match at St. James, with Tottenham Hotspur 29/20 with Centrebet.

If Damien Duff scores at anytime during Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹

Oxford United v Cambridge United, Tuesday, Setanta Sports 1, 7:30pm

Britain’s most prestigious University towns renew their rivalry on the football field on Tuesday when Oxford meet Cambridge in the Blue Square Premier. The two sides are at opposite ends of the table, however, with Oxford only outside of the relegation places thanks to goal difference, while Cambridge are losing out on goal difference to Histon in the race for a playoff position. As such both sides will be eager for a win here, and it is sure to be a closely contested match at the Kassam Stadium.

Oxford are 6/4 with BGbet, with Cambridge also 6/4 at BetWithRed.

If Adam Murray scores at anytime during Oxford United v Cambridge United, BGbet will refund all losing first goalscorer stakes on the match.¹
